Austin’s Mobility Bond – Prop 1

In November the city of Austin voted for a new bond package, prop 1, that aims to provide congestion relief along many of Austins most congested areas. This bond will come as a tax to homeowners of $5 per month for owners of median-priced homes in Austin (~$200,000). Homeowners can also expect that over the course of this particular bond for that rate to go up at around $1/month in 2018 to $6 per month. The goal is to raise over $283 million dollars to fund projects in three major categories: Smart Corridor Projects ($477,500,000), Regional Mobility Projects ($101,000,000) and Local Mobility ($137,000,000).

Smart Corridor Projects

Smart Corridors are the main arteries of our city and some of the most congested parts of the city including streets like Burnet Road, North Lamar, Guadalupe, Airport, MLK, South Lamar, East Riverside, William Cannon and Slaughter Lane. Projects in these areas are going to be designed around reducing traffic congestion, increasing safety and building up alternative modes of travel including bike lanes and bus stops. Eventually, this project will reach out to improve areas like Pleasant Valley, Rundberg West & East, South Congress, and Colony Park Loop Rd.

Regional Mobility Projects

The regional mobility projects are going to seek to improve the major intersections and roadways in town. These will aim to fix congestion and safety concerns at the major intersections of Anderson Mill Rd, RM 620 / 2222 intersection, Parmer Lane, Loop 360 (Westlake Drive Turn), Spicewood Springs Road, and the Old Bee Caves Road Bridge.

Local Mobility

The projects outlined in the local mobility portion of this bond package includes projects located in downtown Austin. This includes improving substandard local roads, and funding sidewalks, urban trails, and implementing “fatality-reducing” safety improvement strategies.

So what’s next?

The Austin City Council has 90 days from the election to receive recommendations from City planning staff and begin monitoring communications about the status and progress of the 2016 Mobility Bond.
